서정원 (書情苑)

본 프로젝트는 경주 황성공원이라는 도시의 역사·문화적 맥락을 품은 공원환경 내에 새롭게 조성되는 복합커뮤니티 시설로, 도서관과 전시관을 중심으로 한 지역문화 플랫폼의 구축을 목표로 한다. 공원과 도시가 만나는 접점에 위치한 부지의 특성을 고려하여, 북측 전면도로와 남측 공원 내부로부터의 진입 흐름을 관통하는 연결 축(axis)을 가장 중요한 배치 개념으로 설정하였다. 

이 축 위에는 두 개의 프로그램적 핵심 요소 - 도서관(Library Box)과 전시관(Exhibition Box) - 을 각각의 독립된 박스 매스로 배치하였으며, 두 매스가 중첩되는 지점에는 지역의 역사와 시간을 담아내는 ‘경주 기록실(Archive of Gyeongju)’이라는 상징적 공간을 배치하였다. 이 기록실은 단순한 기능적 공간을 넘어 두 프로그램을 연결하고 도시와 공원을 매개하는 문화적 거점으로 기능한다.

공간의 진입과 전이 방식은 전통 가람의 배치 개념에서 모티프를 얻었다. 가람의 축선과 마당을 따라 이어지는 공간적 흐름처럼, 방문자는 공원에서부터 이어지는 접근 축을 따라 자연스럽게 내부로 유입되고, 프로그램 간의 단계적 전이를 경험하게 된다. 외부 자연과 내부 지식·전시 공간이 서로 호흡하며 이어지는 이 흐름은 경주라는 도시가 지닌 시간의 층위와 문화적 깊이를 현대적 공간 언어로 재해석한 결과이다. 결과적으로 본 건축물은 공원 속에 자리한 ‘열린 가람(伽藍)’이자, 지역의 지식과 기억이 축적되고 공유되는 현대적 서정(書庭)의 역할을 수행하도록 계획되었다.

This project is a newly established complex community facility situated within the environmental context of Gyeongju Hwangseong Park, a site that embodies the city’s historical and cultural heritage. It aims to build a regional cultural platform centered on a library and an exhibition hall. Considering the site’s unique characteristics as an interface where the park and the city meet, a connecting axis that permeates the flow of entry from the northern frontage road and the southern park interior was established as the primary site planning concept.

Along this axis, two core programmatic elements—the Library Box and the Exhibition Box—are positioned as independent volumetric masses. At the point where these two masses overlap, a symbolic space titled the ‘Archive of Gyeongju’ is situated to encapsulate the local history and the passage of time. Beyond its functional role, this archive serves as a cultural anchor that connects the two programs and mediates the relationship between the city and the park.

The sequence of entry and spatial transition draws inspiration from the layout principles of traditional Garam (Korean Buddhist temples). Much like the spatial flow that follows the axes and courtyards (Madang) of a temple, visitors are naturally drawn into the interior along the approach axis from the park, experiencing a gradual transition between different programs. This seamless flow, where external nature and internal spaces of knowledge and exhibition breathe together, is a reinterpretation of Gyeongju’s layers of time and cultural depth through a contemporary spatial language. Ultimately, the building is designed to function as an ‘Open Garam’ nestled within the park—a modern ‘Seojeong’ (Library Garden) where local knowledge and memories are accumulated and shared.
